While I’ve always been a comic book buff, The Avengers never really struck a chord with me. Having fallen in love with the individual exploits of Marvel’s superheroes, the idea of their worlds colliding held minimal appeal even at age 11.

Be that as it may, there’s the whole sphere of geekdom that will disagree, and subsequently find this next bit (a spoiler) intriguing. A teaser trailer for the film is apparently in the can, with no word yet on when it will make its debut. Not only that, but the film’s villain supposedly makes an appearance, with sources indicating that it will be none other than Loki, adopted brother and nemesis of Thor. [AICN]

Again, this news leaves me as indifferent as ever toward the film, which to me boasts an impressive cast, but not much else. Insofar as Loki’s role, (spoilers) the word is that he “uses the cube to get a hold of the Aliens (aka The Skrulls) to invade Earth and fight The Avengers.” [Latino Review] In what seems to be an already cluttered story, the addition of The Skrulls seems to clutter things even more, but alas I’m sure all of geek culture feels safe in the hands of Joss Whedon.

The Avengers will hit theaters summer 2012.

What do you think of Loki as the villain? The Skrulls? Are you excited or The Avengers?
