Update: TheWrap claim Natalie Portman, Emily Blunt, and Charlize Theron — the latter of whom is leading a different Gillian Flynn adaptation, Dark Places — have been in consideration to portray the eponymous girl. In the meantime, you can read the original story below.

It was just last night when we shared the above photo, featuring none other than David Fincher and Ben Affleck walking side by side. While we chalked this one up to them simply having a friendly chat, it looks like it led to something major. Word has now come in that the duo will be collaborating very, very soon.

According to Deadline, Affleck is in talks to lead Fincher’s adaptation of the hit Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl. Set up over at 20th Century Fox, the Argo Oscar winner had to do a bit of schedule adjustment in order to make room for this thriller. Warner Bros. is nice enough to let him push back production on his Dennis Lehane adaptation Live by Night, which was set for early fall. Instead, Fincher will shoot his project first and then Affleck will jump directly to his next directorial effort, still in time for a 2014 release.

With Fincher putting Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea on the backburner, Gone Girl will be his next, scripted by Flynn herself. The film will follow Affleck as Nick Dunne, who has a strained relationship with his wife Amy (in a role still yet to be cast — once rumored for Reese Witherspoon, who is now only producing), who disappears on their fifth anniversary. As evidence piles up, he is being targeted as the killer, but much more is in play that the public is not privy to.

Are you looking forward to Affleck and Fincher working together?
