Terrence Malick’s ‘Voyage of Time’ Planned For 2014 IMAX Release & Update on ‘The Tree of Life’ Director’s Cut

Written by on May 1, 2013

On a recent creative kick, we got Terrence Malick‘s divisive To the Wonder last month and the project was only one of many he’s been juggling in post-production. While there’s no word on when we’ll see his upcoming back-to-back dramas he shot last year with Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman and many, many more, we’ve now got an update on when two other works may see a release.

Starting with the ambitious project Voyage of Time, The Playlist recently caught up with Malick’s go-to editor Billy Weber at the TCM Classic Film Festival, where he shared when we may be able to see the epic undertaking. Last fall we got word that it was still a ways off, but according to Weber it is “supposed to come out” in 2014, with an undisclosed release date and distributor all lined up. As we know he said “it’s a big IMAX film,” so hopefully this means it’ll be coming to a theater near you and not restricted to certain IMAX theaters.

Featuring narration from Brad Pitt and Emma Thompson, it is reported the film is “aesthetically unique and scientifically accurate” and will chronicle “the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse.” It will follow “the first signs of life, bacteria, cellular pioneers, first love, consciousness, the ascent of humanity, life and death and the end of the universe.”

Moving on to another project, Weber reveals that Malick is still toiling away at a director’s cut of The Tree of Life. He says he doesn’t know how much footage was even shot for the movie, but some of the deleted scenes will be back for a DVD release. Whether or not this is the rumored six-hour cut featuring much more of the middle family portion, we’ll have to wait and see. Criterion Collection, are you listening?

Are you looking forward to both of these Malick projects finally coming our way?
