Consider yourself warned: Spoilers ahead.

For the uninitiated, The Hunger Games, the first in a trilogy penned by Suzanne Collins, is set in the shattered remnants of what was once the Unites States but is now a series of districts subject to the rule of the merciless and affluent Capitol. As part of their penance to the mighty Capitol, each year each district must submit two “tributes” to a ghastly battle royale that is broadcast nationwide as The Hunger Games. The first among many sickening twists is that these tributes are tweens and teens, set to murder each other or be killed themselves. The heroine at the trilogy’s center is the angry archer, Katniss Evergreen, a girl of 16 who is struggling not only for survival but also to keep her humanity in tact amongst the brutal battle.

The Hunger Games will hit theaters in 2013 with hopes of being the next Harry Potter or Twilight. If the film is anywhere near as true to the book’s tone as this clip is, it may well reach its goal.
