Few, if any, actors have had a better last few years than Matthew McConaughey. Continually tied to the latest romantic comedy, the actor began to pick up more and more intriguing projects and 2012 saw an impressive culmination of his work with Bernie, Killer Joe, Magic Mike, as well as the premiere of Mud, which is set to bow next month. While he recently finished shooting The Wolf of Wall Street with Martin Scorsese, as well as the AIDS drama Dallas Buyers Club, the actor is being courted for what would easily be his biggest project yet.

Christopher Nolan recently bagged a late 2014 release date for his sci-fi film Interstellar and now the next process in development is underway with casting. According to Deadline, The Dark Knight Rises director has his sights set on Matthew McConaughey to lead the film as a character named Cooper. Having offered hime the role, no deal has been made, but we’d be surprised if he turned this one down.

We’ll let you know as soon as more details roll in, but we currently know this is a film that was originally set for Steven Spielberg and the story “depicts a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest borders of our scientific understanding.” It is described as a “complex and multi-layered” sci-fi picture that follows “explorers [who] travel through a wormhole,” with conceits such as alternate dimensions and time travel working their way in. His brother Jonathan Nolan, delivered the original script, based on theories developed by Caltech physicist Kip Thorne, then the Inception director then took his brother’s draft and merged his own ideas into it.

Interstellar hits regular theaters and IMAX on November 7th, 2014.
