Word has hit the net that the infamous, timeless novel The Catcher in the Rye, by the late J.D. Salinger, may finally be optioned for the film treatment. Apparently the inheritors of the rebellious author’s estate are feeling the weight of the estate tax and are considering selling the rights to the beloved book.

While this news is still considered a rumor, it’s perking up the interest of fans and writers that would love to take a crack at writing the screenplay. With practically every classic novel adapted for the screen, there always runs the risk of pissing off the original fanbase, i.e. those who grew up reading it.

The Catcher in the Rye, which is widely known for it’s teen angst and strong theme of rebellion, is no exception to this rule.  Many believe turning the classic novel into a film goes against the very nature and  message that it has stood for since it’s publication.  Needless to say, someone has the potential to make a large profit if this film ever gets made.

More news to come.
