With an uptick in the trend these last few years, Hollywood has been working furiously on creating the perfect set of character posters for their latest releases — but, over in Denmark, Lars von Trier has topped them all. While our first four clips introduced some of the ensemble of his erotic two-part journey, Nymphomaniac, we now to get to know them all, intimately, thanks to a set of character one-sheets.
Kicking things off with our main character Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s Joe and going through Shia LaBeouf, Christian Slater, Stellan Skarsgard and many more, the evocative posters feature each player in a state of climax. While I can’t imagine anyone will be rushing out to buy the set to plaster on their walls, it’s a seemingly perfect tie-in with the themes of the film. Also featuring Jamie Bell, Stacy Martin, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Udo Kier, Jean-Marc Barr and more, check them all out below.
The film is a wild and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Gainsbourg). On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Skarsgård), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi-faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
Nymphomaniac premieres in Denmark at the end of the year, before a 2014 release and a possible stop at Cannes for the hardcore version.
