This summer’s Thor may have been ridiculous, but no one can doubt that Chris Hemsworth‘s star has risen. His breakout role as Captain Kirk’s daddy in Star Trek got our attention, he did his best to anchor the Marvel Norse-god-as-superhero flick, and now he’s attached to star in Sony’s original black ops thriller, Shadow Runner. Based on an idea by Hossein Amini, one of the writers for the Hemsworth-starring Snow White and the Huntsman – as well as the screenwriter of the hotly anticipated Drive with Ryan Gosling – the plot and character details are under wraps at this point, but the story will definitely have something to do with “elite commandos.”

Judging by the slate of black ops projects in the pipeline, along with the upcoming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the imminent reboot of the Bourne franchise with The Bourne Legacy, this could be the next genre Hollywood hammers to death. If it kills the superhero crap, it might be worth it. More details will surely emerge as the project develops.

In the meantime, Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor in The Avengers next summer, and if the Red Dawn remake ever gets released, you’ll get to see him kick some Commie ass.

Would you rather see Shadow Runner or The Avengers? What about Thor as a black ops commando during Vietnam, but set in space?
