“I’m so happy. It came out beautifully,” director Todd Haynes recently told us regarding his latest film, Carol. “It’s set in the ’50s, and it’s a very different kind of ’50s film than Far from Heaven was. The feel of it is much less inspired by ’50s cinema, and more by, I guess, photojournalism and a lot of the art photography we were seeing at the time, which has much more gritty… it’s a very poised film, because it has a real sense of control to it. The look of it is much more distressed.”
Set for a Cannes premiere, we now have the first footage from the Cate Blanchett– and Rooney Mara-led project. An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s novel The Price of Salt, the film follows a romance between two New York women in the 1950’s. This first footage, in the form of a promotional reel, isn’t of the highest quality, but it does provide an emotionally palpable, dialogue-free look backed by Jo Stafford‘s “No Other Love.” Check it out below for the film, which recently nabbed an R rating, and we’ll update if a better version arrives.

CAROL follows the relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. A young woman in her 20s, Therese (Mara) is working in a department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage. As the story unfolds—their lives begin to unravel with Carol becoming more fearful of losing custody of her daughter in the case of separation when her husband (Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother because of her previous affair with her best friend Abby (Paulson), and new relationship with Therese.
Carol will premiere at Cannes, which begins on May 13th.
