Kicking off the summer season may be a gang of superheroes, but for our money, we’re much more looking forward to a certain period drama. An adaptation of the Thomas Hardy classic, Far From the Madding Crowd comes from Danish director Thomas Vinterberg and features Carey Mulligan, Tom Sturridge, Matthias Schoenaerts, Juno Temple, and Michael Sheen.

Following Mulligan’s character attracting a trio of suitors, we’ve now got a new trailer for the drama which looks like an emotional, elegant retelling of the classic story with top-notch performances. With it hitting theaters on May 1st, it’ll be too early for a Cannes Film Festival world premiere, but perhaps it’ll show up a bit earlier elsewhere. Check out the new trailer and poster below.

Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
