chantal akerman no home movie

Locarno often serves as a bellwether for how the next year — or, given problems many of these films encounter when seeking distribution, few years — of international cinema will play out, given the selection team’s eye for talents often cast aside by bigger festivals that can pull in bigger names. Their 2015 slate doesn’t break from that tradition, even if a) the films we’ve already highlighted are by established auteurs and b) the title that’s particularly caught my eye is from none other than Chantal Akerman.

Yes, one of the world’s greatest artists, film or otherwise, has a new project: No Home Movie, which sounds an awful lot like a companion to her 1977 masterpiece News from Home. (Note: Hulu Plus subscribers can watch that [along with several other films of hers] right here.) The cultural affairs organization Wallonie-Bruxelles have a synopsis; composed by Akerman herself, it tells us Home is “above all a film about my mother,” in this particular instance a “woman we only see in her apartment. An apartment in Brussels. A film about the changing world and my mother does not see.”

Here, too, is a summary from Locarno’s artistic director, Carlo Chatrian:

“Overtaken by the orgy of images in which we are constantly immersed, cinema may no longer be a home for the world; and yet the world still desperately needs a home. It is Chantal Akerman who most clearly articulates how this word can resonate. Her No Home Movie is a film about the end of a relationship that becomes an image of the end of a home. It is at the same time perhaps the finest tribute that can paid to a home as a place without any particular qualities yet endowed with enormous emotional value. Home is a space for sharing an emotion. In this sense, home functions to an extent as a frame, taking a portion of space, (and time) and confers a particular value upon it. So then film is perhaps the home we lack in terms of being able to read our very confusing present era.”

Also of interest: Chevalier, the new film from Athina Rachel Tsangari (of Attenberg fame); Ben Rivers‘ (A Spell to Ward off the Darkness) The Sky Trembles and the Earth Is Afraid and the Two Eyes Are Not Brothers, which I can’t believe isn’t the title of a Godspeed You! Black Emperor album; an opening-night placement for Jonathan Demme‘s Ricki and the Flash; and retrospectives dedicated to Michael Cimino, Bulle Ogier, Marco Bellocchio, and Walter Murch.

The full, extensive lineup can be seen below, followed by new images from Hong Sang-soo‘s Right Now, Wrong Then and Andrzej Zulawski‘s Cosmos, as well as the Akerman (including a clip), Tsangari, and Rivers pictures:
