Due to his lengthy shoot, extensive post-production and global promotion tour for Django Unchained, we’d have to think Quentin Tarantino‘s viewing log for 2012 was, rightfully, a bit lighter than previous years. His busy schedule meant no top 10 list of the year, but in 2013, he’s kicking things off a bit early. While there’s still three months left in the year, the director has revealed his top 10 of 2013 thus far.

Perhaps not as surprising as previous years (which included The Three Musketeers and X-Men: First Class), there are a few interesting contenders. Considering Kick-Ass was among his favorites of its respective year, we shouldn’t be shocked that the sequel is here, while Gore Verbinski‘s widely dismissed The Lone Ranger pops up. In smaller fare, there’s Afternoon Delight, Drinking Buddies and Frances Ha, while a few of my personal favorites, Before Midnight and Gravityalso appear. Check it out below in alphabetical order and return at the end of the year for the final list. [Quentin Tarantino Archives]

Afternoon Delight (Jill Soloway)
Before Midnight (Richard Linklater)
Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen)
The Conjuring (James Wan)
Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg)
Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach)
Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)
Kick Ass 2 (Jeff Wadlow)
The Lone Ranger (Gore Verbinski)
This Is The End (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg)
