Robert Pattinson to Play Batman in Matt Reeves’ Superhero Film

Written by on May 16, 2019

Update: Deadline has confirmed Pattinson has locked the role.

After the last few years working with some of the best directors in Hollywood and beyond–Claire Denis, James Gray, the Safdies, and David Cronenberg, just to name a few–Robert Pattinson has been inching his way back into the studio arena. He’s set to star in Christopher Nolan’s next film, and now he’s been cast in a superhero role that Nolan himself has much familiarity with.

Variety reports that Pattinson is final talks to play Batman in Matt Reeves’ superhero reboot, simply titled The Batman. Set for a June 25, 2021 release, pre-production for the film begins this summer with Reeves now putting the final touches on his script, which he’s been given more creative freedom to work on than the recent DC films. Meanwhile, Deadline reports that Nicholas Hoult was also in talks for the role, but it seems like Pattinson is the top pick. THR also adds Armie Hammer and Aaron Taylor-Johnson to that shortlist.

As for what’s next for Pattinson, he’ll be seen at Cannes with Robert Eggers’ The Witch follow-up The Lighthouse, and later this fall in David Michôd’s The King and Ciro Guerra’s Waiting for the Barbarians. Following that, he’s part of the ensembles of Antonio Campos’ The Devil All the Time and Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir: Part II.

It’s also a good time to remind you to watch Pattinson’s career-best work in Good Time, which we named the #1 film of 2017 and is now on Amazon Prime. And we’ll leave you with the best news from this announcement:
