Cinematical has brought word that Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum will star in The Vow, an upcoming romantic drama from writer-director Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens). McAdams (The Notebook) and Tatum (Dear John) have both starred in Nicholas Sparks adaptations in the past, although this one, thankfully, is not. Sucsy collaborated on the script – which has reportedly been in the works for over a decade – with Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, a screenwriting duo whose previous credits include Never Been Kissed, He’s Just Not That Into You, and Valentine’s Day.

The Vow will be based on a true story that follows a newlywed couple in New Mexico (Tatum and McAdams) who get into a car crash. When the wife awakes from a coma, she has lost her memory of the marriage, and it is up to Tatum‘s character to try and rekindle their lost romance.

It’s certainly not an entirely original premise, and I still have some doubts about Tatum‘s presence in these romantic dramas. (Can he please return to films like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints?). But McAdams is a strong performer, and in my opinion, she even made The Time Traveler’s Wife somewhat watchable.

Her upcoming slate includes the promising Morning Glory, Midnight in Paris, and an untitled Terrence Malick project, so filming on The Vow is likely going to have to wait until late this year, or maybe even into early 2011. Either way, we probably won’t be seeing this film until 2012.
