Jason Schwartzman, who plays the final boss Gideon Graves in Edgar Wright‘s adaptation of Scott Plgrim vs. The World, talked to Collider briefly about the style and techniques Wright is using to push the narrative in the movie. Schwartzman stated it has a very surreal and dreamy approach purposely  used to create the world series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley made with the graphic novels. Styles implemented include split-screen and animation. He makes a point in stating these techniques are not done frivolously but rather grounded in emotion. This is much talk considering he’s only seen the first 19 minuets.

First, we get news of Jason Reitman falling in love with the movie. Now we have conformation on the styles that are going to be used in the movie. This movie is getting so much momentum, not by the media or promotional techniques, but by word of mouth through people in the movie business. That alone shows how well this movie is coming along. Wright’s use of split-screen seems like an excellent choice in the Scott Pilgrim universe not only because it’s a graphic novel but also because of how fast the story moves throughout the series. What is most surprising is the use of animation. I can only imagine it will be used in Scott’s travels through his dream worlds and “boss” battles. It seems this movie will be hitting all the marks the source material has. Something so rare for today’s movies.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is set for a 2010 release.

Though many directors and actors are commenting on this film, not many people have heard about it. Do you think it’s being over sold?
