Despite Avatar dominating the box office this Christmas season, Guy Ritchie‘s Sherlock Holmes managed to do very well, making almost $400 million worldwide. Like the film was pleading for at the end, it looks like a sequel is being fast-tracked, producer Joel Silver told LA Times. Ritchie was previously attached to an adaptation of the DC Comic Lobo, but that is being handed off to another director. Silver says:

I don’t think he’s going to do it now. The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another ‘Sherlock Holmes’… So we’re trying to see if we can do something quickly with another ‘Sherlock Holmes’ movie. We have some ideas and some good story points.

Silver says that the cast is ready to come back and spoke to the Brad Pitt rumor:

“Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I’d love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great.” In regards to Pitt, Silver said, “Well, I mean, we talked about that at one point, but you know as of right now we’re not sure what we’re going to do. We’ll see what happens.”

I was disappointed in Sherlock Holmes as I was expecting something great from Ritchie. What I got was a moderately fun studio-heavy blockbuster. Now that Holmes has brought in the money, I hope Ritchie can inject more of a personal touch in the next one.

What did you think of Sherlock Holmes? Would you rather have seen Ritchie stay on Lobo?
