Last we heard, Jeremy Renner was looking for a co-star to get this witch hunt started. Noomi Rapace, Diane Kruger, and Eva Green all circled the project. THR now confirms that Gemma Arterton, the star of The Disappearance of Alice Creed, Tamara Drewe, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans (all in 2010), has snagged the Gretel role.
Directed by Tommy Wirkola, who helmed the Nazi zombie film Dead Snow, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is “a dark action movie that picks up with the fairy tale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters.”
Since his break-out role in The Hurt Locker, Renner has been quite busy and hasn’t had time to film. He now has an open slot between Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Avengers. They hope to begin production in Berlin on March 7th.
