Considering he’s been around for over 125 years, one might think Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation Sherlock Holmes might have been waned out of popular culture. With the Benedict Cumberbatch-led series, the Robert Downey Jr.-led franchise and now another upcoming film, that looks to be anything but the case. Bill Condon‘s Mr. Holmes visits the character in his later years, played by the seemingly perfectly cast Ian McKellen.

After premiering at Berlin Film Festival last month to positive acclaim, we now have the first trailer and clip for the film, which shows the figure taking on one last final case having been retired for 30 years. Also starring Laura Linney, Frances de la Tour, and Milo Parker, check out the trailer, clip and poster below for the adaptation of Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind.

In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.
