With The Wolf of Wall Street now in wide release, we suppose it’s no surprise it isn’t going down as easy with holiday audiences. As we said in our full review, “Bolstered by its high-budget, independent financing and production, the film’s overriding sensibility can perhaps be most eloquently summarized as “fuck you.”And maybe you, too, will take this seemingly unending, absolutely relentless plunge of a picture as something of a “fuck you,” for having viewed a gleeful scorning of characters played to a degree that can only demand a viewer’s surrender and will, if necessary, only accept their defeat.” We now have some insight into the creative process, as Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have stopped by Charlie Rose for an extensive 1-hour interview.

Scorsese discusses how he was attracted in capturing a “superb salesman” and DiCaprio says even though he memorized the extensive speeches in the film, they took on a life of their own when shooting. The director also opens up about how his relationship with DiCaprio expanded on The Aviator, truly realizing their similar sensibilities, as well as the editing (in which he works with Thelma Schoonmaker day and night for a year, and doesn’t care about continuity editing). It’s a fascinating chat, as per usual with Charlie Rose, and one can watch it below, along with a chat with Wall Street co-star Jonah Hill, which begins with 21:57 left. We’ve also included over 30 new stills from the film, so check out everything below before (or after) you see Scorsese’s latest.
