No Strings Attached was on the receiving of quite a word-of-mouth campaign, as I swear it was brought up on every single podcast to which I listen. It was reasonably unopposed this weekend, squaring off against the second weekend for The Green Hornet, winning by a narrow margin. It earned $20.3 million, compared to the latter’s $18.1 million.
The King’s Speech continues to expand in its 9th weekend, finishing in 4th, in only 1,680 theaters. It grossed $9.1 million this weekend, totaling $58 million for The Weinstein Company. It was tailed closely by a role call for Oscar favorites: True Grit, Black Swan, and The Fighter in 5th, 6th, and 7th respectively.
Next weekend sees the opening of The Mechanic and The Rite. I’ve noticed a much more extensive ad campaign for The Mechanic, so based on that alone I foresee that to take the weekend. However, Anthony Hopkins brings a lot of star power to the latter. It will be a close weekend. Biutiful also opens in 50 theaters.
