The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog has an update on the much-discussed Christopher Nolan-produced Superman reboot. Last week, a short list of directors for Nolan and co-producer Emma Thomas was revealed, which included the likes of Tony Scott, Matt Reeves, Jonathan Liebesman, Duncan Jones, and Zack Snyder.

It was speculated that Ben Affleck could potentially find himself in the running after the glowing critical and commercial response for his new film The Town, but the Heat Vision report denies that rumor. It also introduces another one, claiming that Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky “is still in active talks” to direct the film. It is known that, in the past, Aronofsky has shown interest in the superhero genre – he was even attached to a Batman film at one point – so this development is hardly out of left field.

What makes it more intriguing, though, despite Aronofsky‘s obvious skill set, is this /Film article which states that Natalie Portman could be interested in playing Lois Lane. It’s likely that Aronofsky and Portman created a positive working relationship during the rigorous filming of Black Swan, which makes their potential collaboration on this Superman picture very exciting. (The actress’ individual talent aside, it’s always nice to see two talented people function well in tandem.)

The week-old short list of directors was interesting, but Nolan remained the key factor for me. The involvement of Aronofsky and Portman, however, could bring this thing to another level. Aronofsky is a filmmaker interested in dark, brooding material, which would make him a great match for Nolan‘s similar vision of the comic book adaptation.
