After last year’s Angelina Jolie-actioner Salt was a bona fide success, bringing in nearly $300 million worldwide for Sony Pictures, there are have been rumors swirling of a sequel. Director Phillip Noyce will not be returning, as he previously made very clear, but Deadline reports that the studio has officially begun work on a sequel.

They’ve hired Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the original, to pen this second iteration. We have no idea where the sequel will head, but Noyce said “If there ever is a sequel, better its directed by someone with a completely fresh take on what I believe could be a totally entertaining and complex series of stories.”

As someone who hated the original (I know I’m in the minority), mostly due to Wimmer’s asinine silly screenplay, I honestly have less than zero interest in sequel. Noyce crafted a few tense sequences, but the film was consistently dragged down by the ridiculous twist and turns for no reasons.

Jolie has a pretty open schedule, just attached to her Cleopatra epic, possibly to be helmed by David Fincher. She could easily do a sequel, but she is waiting to see “if it comes together right.” We’ll keep you updated when it comes to director talks and if Noyce somehow becomes reinvigorated in the project.

Do you actually want to see a Salt sequel? Where do you think it could go?
