Night Moves (Kelly Reichardt)
Rather than the gear shift that was to be expected, Night Moves rather clearly offers a careful reconfiguring (but no sacrifice) of the idiosyncrasies, both formal and narrative, which have made Kelly Reichardt’s voice so important to the American cinema. A critical adherence notwithstanding, the new sense of ambition which Night Moves allows her to exhibit speaks volumes, posing the question of where, now, she might go. – Nick N.
They Came Together (David Wain)
While we still have a few months left to go in 2014, chances are that the latest feature from David Wain will remain the funniest film of the year. Brilliantly and lovingly satirizing the romantic-comedy genre, I wrote about it in detail here, and thankfully, the Blu-ray release comes packed with notable extras. The feature commentary from Wain and co-writer Michael Showalter has its laughs, but takes a more technical look at the making of the film. There’s also over 30 minutes of worthwhile deleted scenes, but the best bonus is a 1-hour and 43-minute live reading of the script (featuring many bits that didn’t get shot) from Sketchfest 2012 with a wealth of notable comedic talents, some of whom made it into the feature. As I can see myself revisiting this over and over again, it’s a must-buy. – Jordan R.
