Terrible news has come in this afternoon, as Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead at the age of 46 in his New York City apartment. Police have confirmed the news to The Wall Street Journal, while NYPost cite additional sources. We got word last May that he went through a 10-day rehab for prescription pills and heroin and today reports indicate that he died from a drug overdose in his West Village apartment on 35 Bethune St.
A native of Fairport, New York, the actor notably won an Academy Award for his performance in Bennett Miller‘s Capote, while also appearing in films from Paul Thomas Anderson, the Coens, Spike Lee, Mike Nichols, and Charlie Kaufman. Whether it was his commanding performance in The Master or 25th Hour, or any number of supporting roles, Hoffman always had a magnetic screen presence, urging me to seek out anything he took part in.
Following a blockbuster turn in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Hoffman recently stopped by Sundance Film Festival for the premiere of John Slattery‘s debut God’s Pocket, as well as Anton Corbijn‘s A Most Wanted Man; both films are expected to be released this year, along with his completed role in the next Hunger Games.
