Nicolas Cage is currently sitting back and sipping on a margarita in the Bahamas. The man has just finished an extensive publicity tour for Sorcerer’s Apprentice and he is tired. The only problem is that he can’t be reached and he is supposed to film Joel Schumacher‘s Trespass with Nicole Kidman in two weeks. [Deadline]
He was set to play the husband, whose wife (played by Kidman) gets kidnapped. Cage had a change of heart though in the last two weeks and wants to turn to his dark side and play the leader of the kidnappers. It is reported that Millennium Films had offered Liev Schreiber (Salt) the role of the husband now.
But, without Cage, who was locked into a $7 million deal, it will be difficult to begin the supposed production in Louisiana this month. Producer Avi Lerner is “scrambling to to find an available star with a bag packed and the muscle to justify a $35 million budget. The alternative is to postpone or scrap the project, which would probably lead to a lawsuit.”
With Lerner and Cage working together in Wicker Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and the upcoming Drive Angry this is not good. One “insider” said “It sucks for everybody who was planning to go to work on the picture.”
I hope Cage can be found and I’d love to see him portray a crazy kidnapper role instead of some the terrible choices he has made the past few years. With Bad Lieutenant and Kick-Ass both delivering it looks like he was currently on a career rebound and I hope it can continue.
