Ever since he landed on our radar with his trippy debut Beyond the Black Rainbow, we’ve been waiting for Panos Cosmatos to return behind the camera. Eight years later, he’s finally back and has exceeded expectations with the LSD-fueled revenge thriller Mandy, which gives Nicolas Cage his best role in many, many years. Ahead of a September release, the first trailer has now arrived, which shows off the insanity in store.

I said in my review from Sundance, “In an era of dime-a-dozen Nicolas Cage movies, you may think you know what you’re getting when sitting down for his latest feature. Rest assured, nothing could prepare you for the experience of Mandy. I’m not even referring to the gory and gleeful shocks–of which the back half has many–but rather Panos Cosmatos’ intoxicating, singular version, which mixes beauty and batshit insanity for an LSD-fueled descent into darkness like no other.”

Also starring Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache, Ned Denny, Olwen Fouéré, Richard Brake, and Bill Duke, see the trailer below.

The quiet life of devoted couple Red (Nicolas Cage) and Mandy (Andrea Riseborough) takes a dark and bizarre turn when a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader (Linus Roache) seek to possess Mandy…body and soul. A shocking assault on the innocent pair leads to a spiraling, surreal, bloody rampage of all out, mind-altering vengeance.

Mandy hits theaters on September 14.
