Watch: James Gray & Cast Talk ‘The Lost City of Z’ in Full Berlinale Press Conference, Plus First Clip

Written by on February 14, 2017

We’re now exactly two months away from the release of James Gray‘s period epic The Lost City of Z and ahead of the U.S. bow, the director and cast have stopped by Berlinale for the European premiere. Joined by Charlie Hunnam, Robert Pattinson, and Sienna Miller, the director and ensemble discuss the role of women in the film, the experience shooting on-location, not wanting to repeat The Embrace of the Serpent, and in one of the most fascinating bits, Gray talks about the unfortunate current relevance of the film.

“Unfortunately, the movie I think is as relevant as ever because we can not close the book on what is clearly a white — let’s be honest here — a white and very racist and colonialist view of the world and unfortunately it still needs exposure,” says Gray. “I wish I could say that we don’t have this wave of nationalism that is gripping the world, but we do. More than ever we need to be reminded that we’re all made of the same clay.”

Check out the full 35-minute press conference below (beginning around the 5-minute mark), along with the first clip, and see our review here.

The Lost City of Z arrives on April 14.
