After his shoestring-budgeted, deeply impressive debut Krisha, Trey Edward Shults followed it up with the chamber horror It Comes at Night, and for his third feature he’s reteaming with A24 once again, but this time going in an altogether different direction. He’ll next be helming the “dramatic musical” Waves, and he’s found his stars, reports Variety.

sterling-k-brownManchester by the Sea and Lady Bird star Lucas Hedges and Sterling K. Brown (The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, Black Panther) are leading the project, alongside It Comes at Night star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Taylor Russell (Lost in Space), Deadline adds. Described as “an energetic, affecting anthem of contemporary teenage life,” the story follows “two young couples as they navigate the emotional minefield of growing up and falling in love.” With production beginning next month in Florida, Shults is currently casting the rest of the ensemble.

In exciting news, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl) will be providing the original score, which will be mixed with “iconic contemporary songs” for an ambitious aural landscape featuring almost wall-to-wall, synchronized music. Hedges is also gearing up for a major fall, leading Jonah Hill’s directorial debut Mid ’90s and Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased, which was just moved from September to the more-promising date of November 2.
