Cahiers du Cinéma’s Top 10 Films of 2013 Includes ‘Spring Breakers,’ ‘Gravity,’ ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’ & More

Written by on November 26, 2013

Established in the 1950’s by André Bazin, Joseph-Marie Lo Duca, and Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, France’s Cahiers du cinéma has long been a bastion for quality film criticism. Year after year their rundown of the top films usually ignites a response and we doubt 2013 will be any different.

They’ve now released their list for 2013, which includes one of the highest-grossing films of the year with Gravity (not an uncommon occurrence, considering the inclusion of Toy Story 3 and Super 8 in recent years), as well as Palme d’Or winner Blue is the Warrmest Color and Steven Spielbergs Lincoln (which was released in France this year). Topping the list is Stranger by the Lake, which we reviewed out of NYFF, followed by Harmony Korine‘s divisive Spring Breakers.

Check out the full list below from @ChrisBeney (via @Cinephiliacs), as well as links to our reviews, where applicable, and trailers for each selection:

1. L’inconnu du lac (Stranger by the Lake), Alain Guiraudie (review)

2. Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine (review)

3. La vie d’Adèle (Blue is the Warmest Color), Abdellatif Kechiche (review)

4. Gravity, Alfonso Cuarón (review)

5. A Touch of Sin, Jia Zhang-ke (review)

6. Lincoln, Steven Spielberg (review)

7. La jalousie (Jealousy), Philippe Garrel

8. Haewon et les hommes (Nobody’s Daughter), Hong Sang-soo

9. Les rencontres d’après minuit (You and the Night), Yann Gonzalez

10. La bataille de Solférino (Age of Panic), Justine Triet

Are any of your favorite films of the year included on Cahiers’ top ten? Are any titles undeserving?
