There I was; sitting in a theater at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival for the premiere of would-be Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire. The movie ended, a standing ovation ensued, I turned around and the woman I just fell in love with onscreen was standing directly behind me. I just witnessed the break-out of Frieda Pinto and it was a beauty to behold. Flash forward a few years later and she is in one of the best-received films of the summer (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and has another feature premiering at TIFF.

Directed by the prolific Michael Winterbottom, coming off The Killer Inside Me and The Trip, Trishna is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy‘s novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles and also stars Riz Ahmed from Four Lions and Centurion. We have our first trailer and through zero dialogue it completely convinces me to check it out come next month. After a sadistic thriller and an all-out comedy, I’m greatly looking forward to what Winterbottom can do with a love story. Check it out below and see more stills we’ve posted here.
