We recently saw Tom Cruise explore an eradicated Earth in the trailer for Oblivion and now it’s time for another 2013 sci-fi blockbuster that sees our planet in a very different light far into the future. Director M. Night Shyamalan returns after The Last Airbender with After Earth, an adventure that finds Will Smith and his son Jaden on our now treacherous home as they attempt to escape.

Dealing with perception and memories, there’s another connection to the aforementioned blockbuster, but this project seems to take a lighter tone, with some flying sequences and wildlife that doesn’t seem too far removed from the Avatar universe. We know Shyamalan can bring the visuals, but hopefully Sony’s tentpole has a worthy story. Check out the trailer below.

Synopsis:

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

After Earth opens on June 7th, 2013.
