Few directors in Hollywood have had an odder path than Brad Peyton. Making his feature directorial debut on Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, he made a somewhat natural jump in the family film genre to this year’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. He’s now set to take an entirely different turn, attached to helm WB’s big-budget superhero film Lobo and now according to a recent report from THR he’s taking the Roland Emmerich route for a new disaster movie.

Peyton is in talks to director San Andreas 3D, which was picked up by New Line late last year. Written by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore, with a touch from Allan Loeb (21, Rock of Ages), the film focuses on a huge California earthquake and more specifically, on a man who is “forced to go on the road to reconcile with his children and his estranged wife, who’s moved away and taken up with another man”.

With a budget of $100 million, there aren’t many more details on this particular project. The plot sounds ripped from 2012, but there’s room for much improvement there, at least character-wise. While Peyton’s films haven’t appealed to me previously, hopefully he can prove himself in a different playing field.

Would you rather see Peyton take Lobo or San Andreas 3D?
