Just a month after his hit reboot of Star Trek came into theaters around the world, JJ Abrams has signed on to produce a fourth episode of the Mission: Impossible movie series. Abrams, who directed M:I3, was personally asked to return for this new project by Tom Cruise, producer and star of the previous films.

JJ stated that he is, “incredibly honored,” to be offered the producer position and tells TV Guide that the two have a “cool idea” they are pursuing for the plot. A screenplay has yet to be written so there is not yet word on when production could get underway. Many suspect Abrams will not direct the film because Paramount plans to have a Star Trek sequel underway by that time.
