David Fincher‘s adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has a release date set for December 2011 the Times is reporting [via ThePlaylist]. Though it has been out there for a while, this confirms that Fincher is tied to the project and Sony looks to be moving forward.

The film will be based on the Stieg Larsson novel of the same name. Depending on the receipt of the first installment, the second two novels of the trilogy, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest, will be filmed together.

I am the only person who didn’t like Fincher’s Zodiac and likewise the only person who did like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Therefore I am torn on Fincher’s involvement for this project. I think he is capable of doing some stellar work irrespective of story (e.g. Benjamin Button), but also some lackluster work with an amazing story (e.g. Zodiac). That is to say, how he adapts the story will not have a tremendous impact on its success. I am anxious to see who he gets to work with; there have been some big names tied to it including Brad Pitt, Carey Mulligan, and Ellen Page though no one is confirmed.

What is your favorite Fincher flick? Who should star in this pic?
