“I’m trying not to do the obvious thing that everybody does with a film like this,” director Gareth Edwards recently told Empire, while speaking about his upcoming Godzilla. “At its heart is the father-son pairing of Bryan Cranston‘s nuclear physicist and Aaron Johnson‘s soldier,” he said regarding the story. Speaking about the tone, he adds, “It makes the big things look bigger when you’ve just had a quiet moment. If everything is whizz-bang constantly throughout the whole movie it just becomes nothing. So you have to carefully go to quiet and restrain things so that the other things hit you hard.”

If anyone has seen his debut Monsters, Edwards nails that back-and-forth, so hopefully he can do it on a bigger scale with a much bigger monster. With the film arriving in theaters in just under three months, Warner Bros. has now released a new full-length trailer, presumably attached to to 300: Rise of An Empire next week. Featuring voice-over from Cranston before we see a handful of epic setpieces, check it out below for the film also starring Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, and David Strathairn. One can also see details here regarding the forthcoming theatrical re-release of the original Godzilla, which will make its way to theaters in April.

Godzilla opens on May 16th.
