With last year’s Jobs purged from our memory, it’s time for Aaron Sorkin to hopefully deliver the definitive biopic of the Apple co-founder and technology pioneer, who would’ve celebrated his 59th birthday this past week. With a completed script, we’ve just been waiting to see who will come aboard to direct — and, thankfully, it appears to have a perfect match.

After working together on The Social Network, Variety reports that David Fincher is in early talks to direct the feature, produced by Scott Rudin. Based on Walter Isaacson‘s biography, the Sony Pictures project takes quite an unexpected approach: we learned well over a year ago that the film would contain “around three 30-minute scenes all set right before three major product launches.”

These time periods would be the launch of the first Mac (early 1984), the NeXT (throughout 1997, around the time Jobs returned), and the iPod (late 2001). With Fincher still finishing up post-production on Gone Girl, which lands in October, sources say that filming wouldn’t take place until late this year, which could mean a release for the fall of 2015. It’s certainly a perfect creative fit, so we’ll look forward to confirmation when it arrives.
