The Gift (Joel Edgerton)

the_gift

In his thoroughly strategized directorial debut The Gift, actor-writer Joel Edgerton recognizes curiosity as a seed. He plants one hardly five minutes in, based on the relatable subject of weird people you know in high school, and the self-amusement in seeing how they’ve turned out years later. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play Simon and Robyn, a married couple who have moved back to his neck of the woods after a personal tragedy in Chicago. In a furniture store, they meet Edgerton’s Gordo, high school classmate of Simon, who talks sheepishly but with interest in reconnecting. Harnessing the throwaway sentiment of “we should catch up sometime,” Simon kind of blows him off, while muttering to Robyn that Gordo (“The Weirdo”) was a joke decades ago, too.

Mulholland Drive (David Lynch)

mulholland

One of the most long-awaited Criterion titles finally arrives to the collection today: David Lynch‘s Mulholland Drive, a 21st century masterpiece will be burned into your mind like few others. While the release isn’t packed with extra, it does feature a new Lynch-approved transfer, along with interviews from much of the cast and crew, as well as  deleted scene and some on-set footage. While many question if this truly a horror film — like much of Lynch’s work — we can think of no better viewing experience this Halloween. – Jordan R.

My Fair Lady (George Cukor)

As far as Best Picture winners go, few are as pleasant as this Audrey Hepburn-led musical adaptation. Yes, perhaps more than a few minutes can be shaved off the nearly three-hour runtime, but we welcome the new4K restoration, which comes from an 8K scan of the original negative and what’s surviving from the 65mm print. On the Blu-ray is over 90 minutes of special features including a variety of original trailers and featurettes that were used in theaters to promote the feature film, as well as footage from the film’s Los Angeles and British premieres in 1964. – Jordan R.
