The Age of Adaline (Lee Toland Krieger)

If Nicholas Sparks took a stroll through The Twilight Zone, it might look a little like The Age of Adaline, a new fantasy ambitious enough to make the case that looking like a 29 year-old Blake Lively for over a century is actually a curse. To director Lee Toland Krieger’s credit, the film does develop an effective note of melancholy and wistfulness; Lively, too, hits the right notes as a woman who has lived so long that everything passes by without as much fuss, fret or passion as it once did. For the cynical, this may become a slog, but Adaline turns out to be so earnest and genuinely sweet, that one should be able to forgive its schmaltzy excesses, especially when one of them is Harrison Ford’s best performance in years. – Nathan B. Dressed to Kill (Brian De Palma)

dressed_to_kill

Like every cornerstone of Brian De Palma’s oeuvre, Dressed to Kill exposes its maker’s driving obsessions in a less-than-flattering, albeit wildly entertaining manner. This particular entry, among his finest, is in no short supply of the roving cameras, pitch-black humor, and leering directorial eye that we know him for, but it stands apart for being one of the most observant — both for its autobiographical roots (note the central interest of Keith Gordon’s character) and his then-wife, Nancy Allen, cast as a rare De Palma female taking agency. Sprinkle in one of Michael Caine’s most genuinely surprising performances, and your Saturday night just became a whole lot more fun. – Nick N.

The Man Who Wasn’t There (Joel and Ethan Coen)

Although it’s been released on Blu-ray in other countries, today the United States finally gets a high definition release of the Coens‘ 2001 black-and-white noir. Following Billy Bob Thornton as a barber whose simple life becomes anything but when he blackmails his wife’s boss and lover. Featuring commentary from Thornton and the Coens, as well as deleted scenes, a making of, and a talk with Roger Deakins, this should hold one over until Hail, Caesar! next year. – Jordan R.
