It makes sense that Zoe Bell would choose to produce and star in an exploitation-inspired movie – after all, the New Zealand-born stunt woman/actress has Quentin Tarantino’s grindhouse homage Death Proof to thank for her most memorable role. After months on the film festival circuit, her twist on women-in-prison films Raze is preparing for release, and a trailer just dropped to showcase its abundant fight choreography.

Directed by Josh C. Waller, Raze focuses on a group of women who are held captive by an elite, secret society and forced to fight one another to the death. As the trailer suggests, there are no half-naked cat fights and shower scenes here – just serious face pummeling, and plenty of it. Audiences looking for a few epic beatdowns should find them here, but Bell assures that there’s more than just bleak violence – in an interview we did with her last April, she expressed satisfaction over the laughter the film incited at its Tribeca premiere. Whether it’s amusing or not, the opportunity to see a hardcore all-female action thriller is hard to pass up. See trailers, synopsis and retro poster below:

Synopsis:

Awakening after being abducted, JAMIE finds herself in a concrete bunker, and she discovers that she is not alone. She and SABRINA, a fellow abductee, both soon realize that they are in a modern day “coliseum” where, along with 48 other women, they are condemned to kill each other in order to protect their very own loved ones.

Raze also stars Rachel Nichols, Sherilyn Fenn, Doug Jones, Tracie Thoms, Rebecca Marshall, Bailey Anne Borders, and Allene Quincy. The film hits theaters and VOD on  January 10th, 2014.
