After an eclectic slate last year including new films from Paul Thomas Anderson, Andrew Dominik, John Hillcoat, Quentin Tarantino and David O. Russell, 2013 will bring more standard fare for The Weinstein Company, save for a few exceptions. Despite a handful of seemingly conventional biopics and similar awards hopefuls landing later in the year, they’ve got Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer and James Gray’s Lowlife still awaiting release dates, but today brings news of another highly-anticipated title finally being slotted.

Following its international theatrical release (and even home release in some countries), Wong Kar-Wai‘s The Grandmaster has been given an August 23rd, 2013 release. Produced by Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison, the film which follows the story of Ip Man (Tony Leung) has also been given a slight title change for U.S. audiences, now going under the name Grandmasters.

Released in the same timeframe of Lawless last year, the distributor is also planning a wide release for the film, which comes as a bit of a surprise. It will face off against some hefty competition, including Edgar Wright‘s The World’s End (which, according to the director’s Anna Kendrick, turned out pretty well) and the long-delayed horror film You’re Next, as well as the YA adaptation of The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.

Do you like the new title? Are you happy with the release schedule?
