The batch of worthwhile roundtables continues today, following this week’s supporting actress contenders. Jennifer Aniston (Cake), Emily Blunt (Into the Woods, Edge of Tomorrow), Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Miss Julie, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, A Most Violent Year), Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars, White Bird in a Blizzard), and one of this year’s top breakthrough stars, Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle, Beyond the Lights) all gathered for a one-hour discussion.
Chastain talks about crying after seeing The Fault in Our Stars (on a plane), how she was typecast differently after The Tree of Life than Zero Dark Thirty, and more. The group also talk about reading reviews, working with a female crew, and getting into the business, but one of the best quotes comes from Chastain, who says, “If I had a done character like Maya in Zero Dark Thirty 10 years ago, it would have been a completely different performance. As we get older, we develop more skills. I would have been so excited about like craft service and the free food and, you know, fancy restaurants. Everything that we criticize young actresses for, they’re supposed to do because that’s when we’re supposed to make mistakes. And find out who we are. So I would have made all those mistakes. I mean, I wouldn’t have made every mistake, but yeah my heart goes out to those girls. Every time you fail, you learn more.”
