Often times studios will acquire foreign film and festival titles only to do absolutely nothing with them. We feared one such case was with The Weinstein Company and their acquisition of the 2010 Swedish crime drama Snabba Cash. After keeping it in their vault for quite a bit, they’ve now decided to release it and with good reason. Star Joel Kinnaman is coming off AMC’s The Killing and about to lead Hollywood’s RoboCop remake. Then there is director Daniel Espinosa, whose last film was Universal’s hit actioner Safe House. Finally, they’ve roped in Martin Scorsese to lend his name to the film as presenter. With the timing right, we’ve got the first domestic trailer with opts for barely any dialogue, instead a mix of imagery in the drug underground. It actually looks like a tense, exciting entry into this genre and one I’m looking forward to check out this summer. See the trailer below via Apple, with plans for a complete trilogy to make its way to the states if all goes well.

Synopsis:

Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), EASY MONEY is a Swedish crime thriller based on the international best-selling novel Snabba Cash by Jens Lapidus. Lower-class business student JW (Joel Kinnaman from AMC’s ‘The Killing’) falls in love with a sexy heiress while living a double life mingling with Stockholm’s wealthy elite. To keep up the facade of his lifestyle, he’s lured into a world of crime. Jorge is a petty fugitive on the run from both the police and Serbian mafia. He hopes that brokering a massive cocaine deal will allow him to escape for good. Mafia enforcer Mrado is on the hunt for Jorge, but his efforts are complicated when he’s unexpectedly saddled with caring for his young daughter. As JW’s journey ventures deeper into the dark world of organized crime, the fate of all three men becomes entangled and ends with a dramatic struggle for life and death.

Easy Money hits theaters on July 11th.
