Suspiria 1

By and large, a remake is an uphill battle for creators. Fans of the original will hope for something fresh and exciting, when Hollywood seems to generally be against both of those qualities. When it comes to horror, however, we’ve certainly seen our share of needless ones, but a few of the best — The Thing, The Fly, Funny Games, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Ring — are part of the genre. Hopefully we can add another one to the list next year.

The Amazon Studios-backed remake of Dario Argento’s horror masterpiece Suspiria helmed by Luca Guadagnino, whose drama A Bigger Splash made waves this summer, has now begun production in Italy. With the top-notch cast, featuring a reunion with Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson, as well as Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz, we now have a familiar face to add to the ensemble. According to EW, Jessica Harper, the star of the 1977 original, will appear in the film.

Suspiria (Latin for “sighs”) tails a young American ballet dancer as she travels to Europe to attend a storied dance academy in Germany. Following a series of murders, the ballerina becomes entangled in the malevolent, supernatural entity (or entities) dwelling within the academy’s walls. The original film, recently restored, will also get a theatrical re-release in Italy from January 30 through February 1st, according to Variety. Expected to stop by the Berlin Film Festival, hopefully a U.S. release is around the corner ahead of Guadagnino’s remake next year, and in the meantime one can see a new trailer below.
