Sam Rockwell stole the show as a fun-loving water park manager in the summer comedy The Way, Way Back, but he plays a very different role in his next film A Single Shot. His transformation is showcased in a new trailer for the crime thriller, in which he plays a man fighting for his life after making a grave mistake.

The Tribeca selection from director David M. Rosenthal follows hunter John Moon (Rockwell) who accidentally shoots a young girl, then runs when he finds a cache of money next to her body. He soon realizes that his discovery is more trouble than it’s worth when a local gang comes looking for the stash, claiming that it belongs to them. The footage suggests a similarity to films such as A Simple Plan and No Country For Old Men, in which the blue-collar protagonists’ lives are made worse by what they think is a stroke of luck. Considering how well those titles were received, A Single Shot is in good company. See trailer and synopsis below:

Synopsis:

David M. Rosenthal’s white-knuckle thriller starts with a bang: a single shot, aimed at a lone deer, that hits and kills a young woman. The hunter, John Moon (Sam Rockwell, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS), watches her die before discovering a box of money near her body. In a desperate panic, he takes the cash — hiring a low-rent lawyer (William H. Macy, FARGO) to fight his wife’s (Kelly Reilly, FLIGHT) divorce suit — and attempts to cover up the killing. But when he discovers that the money belonged to a group of hardened criminals, the hunter becomes the hunted in this tense cat-and-mouse struggle in the backwoods of West Virginia.

A Single Shot also stars William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Joe Anderson, and Kelly Reilly. The film hits iTunes on August 20th, and will see limited theatrical release on Sept. 20th.
