Javier Bardem Isn’t a Johnny Depp Fan in First Trailer for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’

It looks like On Stranger Tides was good for one thing and one thing only: whatever was next for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it’s a mathematical impossibility we would get diminished returns. So, while we can’t muster up much anticipation for next summer’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, there are a few factors that make us curious. While it’s not the return of Gore Verbinski, directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg last helmed the Oscar-nominated Kon Tiki, so they at least know their way around the high seas.

Then there’s Javier Bardem as the main villain, Captain Salazar, who gets the spotlight in the first trailer, which is absent of Johnny Depp, in a smart move by Disney. Taking on a transformation that seems to go even past what he did for Skyfall, hopefully he can inject some much-needed life into this franchise. Also starring Golshifteh Farahani (!), Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Orlando Bloom, and, yes, Paul McCartney, check out the teaser and poster below.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens on May 26th, 2017.
