What is up with Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity? After Angelina Jolie has passed twice, Deadline is reporting that Natalie Portman has also left the project due to scheduling conflicts. The $80 million 3D Warner Brothers sci-fi flick is desperately searching for a female lead, as Robert Downey Jr. is the only one attached so far. His role will be quite small, leaving a substantial role for our lead.
And WB is looking to nab Sandra Bullock for that lead as insiders say the studio is making “a full court press” for her. The Oscar-winning (sigh) actress would “play the role of a space station team member who tries to find her way back to earth and her daughter after the space station she is working on is destroyed by a debris field from an exploded asteroid.”
They report that the shortlist also includes Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde and Blake Lively, but it is a “tricky role to cast.”
It was also reported yesterday by Vulture that David O. Russell has left his adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Now we learn that producer and star Natalie Portman has also exited. Russell will instead focus on Old St. Louis, the dramedy starring Vince Vaughn as we reported earlier. The only change is the originally attached actress Chloe Moretz will take over for Scarlett Johansson. The film will be begin shooting next year.
As for Gravity, we can only wait and see if Sandra Bullock nails the part, but with production looking to start soon I hope WB and Cuaron can get it together. It’s been too long since Children of Men.
Who would you like to see get the Gravity role?
