Writer/Director Roland Emmerich must have gotten tired with destroying the world in such films as Independence Day, Godzilla, The Day of Tomorrow, and 2012. For his next film Anonymous, he tackles William Shakespeare. From writer John Orloff (Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, A Mighty Heart) comes the conspiracy of who was actually behind the masterworks.

We now have the first trailer via LatinoReview and due to the distracting use of Radiohead‘s Everything in Its Right Place, I cant properly judge what I saw. I’m going to go off and listen to Kid A and let me know what you thought of the trailer below for the film starring Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Sebastian Armesto, and Rafe Spall.

Synopsis:

The film is set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, “Anonymous” speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare?

Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. “Anonymous” poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

Anonymous hits theaters September 30th, 2011.
