While we wait to see if David Fincher‘s mega-budget 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will ever actually get made, the submarine genre gets another smaller scale entry in 2014, when Kevin Macdonald‘s Black Sea hits screen. Although Focus Features have yet to confirm a precise release date, today brings our first look at the adventure thriller.

Featuring Jude Law as a rogue submarine captain who is searching for sunken treasure in the depths of the Black Sea, the stills come from EW. The director, whose How I Live Now arrives next month, says he’s attempting to capture the tone of classics like Run Silent, Run Deep and Das Boot. “They’re incredibly tense, exciting films because of the claustrophobia and the sense that you’re somewhere you shouldn’t be. Like in space, if something goes wrong, you’re dead,” he tells EW. With 80% of the movie actually taking place in the claustrophobic space, see the stills below as production wraps up in the next few weeks.

Black Sea will hit theaters in 2014.
