There’s no denying that writer/director David Ayer has found a comfortable place in the cop drama genre. After scripting Training Day he went on to deliver such films as Street Kings, Harsh Times and recently, his most praised film yet (still a mystery to yours truly) with End of Watch. Coming off the success of that film, he’s finally set to switch genres for an upcoming project.
According to Deadline, Ayer will make the jump into World War II territory with the actioner Fury. Paid a hefty $1 million for his spec script, the 1945-set film follows five men in an American tank who must battle the desperate Germany army before the Nazi regime collapses. Ayer describes his intention to “bring a fresh execution to the genre.” He adds, “What these men went through is worthy of a complex, honest portrayal. This will have incredible, visceral action and complex rich characters. I plan to bring tank combat to life in a way that lands with a modern audience.”
While I haven’t been a fan of Ayer’s previous work, hopefully this genre switch will provide a better script. With production for Fury set this fall, Ayer already has another film in the can with Ten, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joe Manganiello, Sam Worthington, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Max Martini, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams and Mireille Enos. It will hit theaters on January 24th, 2014.
