Following her big-budget debut in Kong: Skull IslandBrie Larson will have some more genre fun in Free Fire later this spring, but she’ll soon return to more independent dramatic fare. Deadline reports that Larson is prepping Victoria Woodhull, which has been picked up by Amazon Studios. Following the first female candidate for presidency of the United States, Larson is set to produce and star in the biopic, which follows the titular suffragist who, in 1872, ran and was nominated for President — a whole 40 years before women had the right to vote. Brett Ratner is attached to direct, with a script penned by Ben Kopit.

In related news, Larson’s director on RoomLenny Abrahamson, is set to direct his next feature, according to Deadline. Titled Burning Rainbow Farm, it’s an adaptation of the book by the same name from Dean Kuipers. The book tells the true story of two advocates of marijuana who had a five-day standoff with the FBI, which resulted in both of their deaths. The script will be penned by playwright Cory Finley.

Regarding the material, Abrahamson said:

I’ve always been fascinated by the tension in U.S. political discourse between various ideals of personal liberty and the perceived threats against them from the state. The intensely moving and tragic story of Tom and Rollie and the fate of Rainbow Farm, brilliantly captured and contextualized in Dean Kuiper’s excellent book, is a vivid and compelling way of dramatizing a fundamental fracture which continues to define U.S. society today. I’m delighted to be working with such great producers as Alix and Adam, alongside my partner Ed Guiney and very excited to be collaborating with Cory Finley, who is an exceptional talent.

Lastly, director Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan) has started gathering a cast for her next project, a comedic drama titled She Came To MeDeadline now confirms that Nicole KidmanSteve Carell, and Amy Schumer have all been attached to star. While not much is known about the project, it is said to be a witty and heartfelt narrative centered in the world of contemporary opera.
